Screen printing vs DTF printing
When it comes to custom t-shirts and apparel, the printing method you choose makes all the difference in how your final product looks, feels, and lasts. Here is information about screen printing vs DTF printing.
At Kirkwood Trading Company, we get a lot of questions about the difference between screen printing and DTF (Direct to Film) printing. Both methods have their strengths, and the best choice depends on your design, budget, and goals.
Here is a breakdown to help you decide which printing style is right for your next project.
What is Screen printing?
Screen printing is the tried-and-true method for custom apparel. Your design is pushed through a mesh screen using a squeegee. The ink only penetrates the search in the specific area meant for the design. This creates a bold and vibrant print directly on the garment.
Durability: Screen printed designs hold up extremely well over time, even after many washes.
Vibrant colors: Ideal for bold logos, solid graphics, and larger orders.
Cost Effective in Bulk: The more shirts you order the more affordable each piece becomes.
Best for: businesses ordering uniforms, event shirts, school spirit wear, and anyone wanting a long-lasting professional finish.
What is DTF Printing
DTF, or Direct to FIlm printing, is a newer technology where your design is printed onto a special film and then heat pressed onto the garment.
Pros of DTF Printing:
Versatility: Works great on almost any fabric, including polyester and blends.
Detail and Color Range: Perfect for full-color images, photos, and intricate designs.
Small Runs Friendly: Great option for smaller orders since there are no setup screens required.
Best For: Smaller runs, detailed artwork, multi-color logos, or specialty fabrics.
Which should you choose?
DTF is much more labor intensive compared to screen printing. So if you are looking for bulk order shirts, say 48 or more shirts then screen printing will be your most cost effective option. Depending on the design of a given t-shirt, we can print between 500-1,000 shirts per hour. To print DTF prints and press them individually on 500-1,000 shirts would take multiple days so they’d be more expensive and there would not be large bulk discsount.
If you a custom t-shirt order you want printed between 12-48 t-shirts and it’s a one, two, or 3 color design. Screen printing would again be the most cost effective method.
If you are only wanting a handful of shirts and a very detailed photo realistic design, the DTF would be the most cost effective method.
